The University was founded on October 17, 1955, by the Union of Armenian Evangelical Churches in the Near East (UAECNE) and the Armenian Missionary Association of America (AMAA) as a liberal arts college to assist in the preparation of teachers and pastors.

Empowered by its newly acquired authorization from the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education to offer graduate programs, since 1995, the institution has started four Masters programs: Educational Administration and Supervision, General Psychology, Clinical Psychology, and Masters in Business Administration. As clearly highlighted during the 50th Anniversary celebratory activities throughout the year 2005, Haigazian University has served Lebanon and the region by empowering valuable human resources for a better life and service.

keeping with Haigazian University's mission to help the individual grow as a complete person, the academics are supplemented by a wide range of activities, including the physical, social, and spiritual. Within a context of academic freedom, students are encouraged  to explore—or discover—their faith, and grow closer to God. The Campus Ministry, under the leadership of the Rev. Greg Lee-Parker, interfaces with students through Spiritual Life activities and personal contacts, and offers a variety of ways to explore faith in Jesus Christ. Financial Aid
Haigazian University makes higher education possible for qualified men and women by means of a variety of financial assistance programs. Financial assistance is usually provided to students who qualify on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated need. Financial Aid is granted annually to regular full-time students. Financial Aid recipients must remain in good academic standing and maintain normal educational progress. Students who are on academic or disciplinary probation will not receive Financial Aid for the following year. The work program requires that students receiving Financial Aid from the University be assigned duties in laboratories, libraries, offices, or related institutions for several hours each week. The number of hours assigned to each student is proportional to the amount of Financial Aid granted to the student by the University. The vast majority of Financial Aid given by HU is in the form of need-based Financial Aid. In addition, special academic scholarships are offered based on academic performance. HU also offers athletic scholarships, graduate assistantships and Financial Aid for graduate studies. In 2008-2009 the University awarded around $1,100,000 in need-based grants and merit scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students. Around 63% of HU students receive Financial Aid.
