The American University of Beirut (AUB) was founded in 1866 as a private, independent, non-sectarian institution of higher learning, functioning under a charter from the State of New York. AUB has grown from 16 students in a rented house to a major university with over 7,572 students located on a 73-acre campus overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The University is governed by an autonomous Board of Trustees comprised of international leaders in business, education, diplomacy, engineering, philanthropy, science, and medicine.

The AUB campus life offers the students the chance to become involved in a variety of activities throughout the year. Most of the activities are organized by clubs and societies that are run by students under the supervision of the Department of Student Activities. A cabinet is elected yearly to oversee the clubs/societies activities and control the financial state/funding of the club.

The American University of Beirut has a strong financial aid program to assist its many able and qualified students who could not otherwise meet the cost of tuition. The basic view of AUB is that families have an obligation to finance their student's education to the extent that they are able.
