The creation of the Arab Open University came as a personal initiative by HRH Prince Talal Bin Abdulaziz, President of the Arab Gulf Program for United Nations Development Organizations (AGFUND). Although roots of the concept go back to 1976, a more formal call was made by HRH Prince Talal in 1996.
Following a feasibility study and subsequent standing collaboration with the United Kingdom Open University (UKOU), the AOU was established under the umbrella of the AGFUND. The AOU has since then been adopted in principle as an Arab private institution of higher education with a special status

Activities are a vital part of the students’ educational experience helping them establish bonds with their university and the community as a whole. Students are encouraged to engage in social, cultural and athletic events.
Sport Clubs: Basket ball and football teams are coached to participate in tournaments across the country. Athletic activities help improve the physical well- being as well as the social life of the students.
A list of current clubs includes: ITC Club, Business Club, English Club, Music Club, and Environment club engaging in a variety of events and contributing to the student magazine.
Chess Club, Young Writer’s Club and many other clubs are being established

(for example, you can submit your application in October 2006 to start in October 2007). Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible within that time span.

Packages are priced separately.
On the date of placement test, students should pay the amount of $103 for registration and placement test.
